Annecy old town market
It is the finest market in the area: stalls line the arcades and canals of rue Sainte-Claire on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 7 am to 1 pm all year round (tourist office). Tuesday is mostly food; on Fridays and Sundays, clothing and crafts join in. On the last Saturday of the month, a flea market takes over. Come early: from 10 am, the crowds are thick.
On the west shore, 10 minutes away
In Saint-Jorioz, the weekly market is on Thursday morning (local council), and a farmers' market is held on Tuesday late afternoon. In Sevrier, head to place de la Mairie on Wednesday morning. In summer, evening craft markets also liven up some lakeside villages.
In the Bauges: the taste of the mountains
Over the Col de Leschaux lie the Bauges markets: Lescheraines on Tuesday morning and Le Châtelard on Friday morning. In summer, the Bauges farmers' market in Le Châtelard, on Friday evenings with live music, is a real village occasion (Le Châtelard council). It is the perfect chance to taste Tome des Bauges, a protected-origin cheese, straight from the producers.
South of the lake: Faverges
Faverges has a market on Wednesday morning and a farmers' market in the covered hall on Friday from 4 pm to 7 pm. On the way, Tamié Abbey, which makes the cheese of the same name, is worth a detour.
And right opposite the gîte
No need to go far to eat well: the Fromagerie de la Cochette, an artisan cheese dairy just opposite the gîte, sells cheese, cured meats, vegetables, meat and honey from the village. To order, it prepares raclette or fondue baskets for your group.
What to take home?
- Tome des Bauges (PDO), reblochon, tomme de Savoie, abondance
- Honey and jams from the massif
- Diots sausages and Savoyard saucisson
- Savoie wines and génépi, in moderation
